For five years I lived on Downing Street in Clinton Hill, Brooklyn, directly across from what’s known as the Broken Angel House. A “handcrafted mansion of bizarre angles and strange art,” it was owned and occupied by artists Arthur and Cynthia Wood. From the 70s on, the creative couple adorned the building, installing stained glass and other unique accents. Today, roughly 40 years later, the property stands bare and undone, foreclosed under Madison Realty Capital.
It’s sad to see the building’s colorful windows boarded up and its ornate triangular roof missing. I’m nostalgic for the charismatic house next to my old home that now serves as a 4-story brick tombstone.
