Chip’s Thoughts: Herb Lubalin
By Anthony “Chip” Fernandez, REA Designer
When it comes to typographic innovation, Herb Lubalin(1918 – 1981) is one of the most influential graphic designers of the 20th century. He pushed the boundaries in both type and design, and introduced styles still applied to design today. His impact on the art community has shown throughout the years – whether it’s design for high-end companies or design at the grass-roots level. His roles, ranging from agency art directors to publication designers, show the depth and scope of his knowledge, talent, and insight in typographic communication. His countless type lockups are extremely well-known and often imitated by modern designers, but his claim to fame is his typeface, ITC Avant Garde. His legacy will live on for centuries to come.
